Media Fragmentation and Consolidation

Media fragmentation is a challenge digital media people face everyday. Although it is a problem that has been growing exponentially over the last decade as digital platforms have evolved and matured, 2009 will be a milestone year for this trend. I predict that the hundreds of advertising networks available today will dwindle down to about 20 before the year is over.

 

This consolidation will allow media planners to more effectively use the billions of bulk impressions available on a monthly basis to reach their target audiences through a shorter list of media vendors and a consolidation of best of breed targeting technologies.

 

While the era of fragmentation is likely over for traditional ad networks, this will not be the case across the board. On the web 2.0 side, segmenting options are truly endless so marketers are able to engage with and micro-target users. These opportunities are only going to increase with web 3.0 looming on the horizon.

Fragmentation is far from over.
