Are you a linking prude or a linking…well you know?

Working to build links to a site is one of the most important factors in an SEO campaign.  However, building quality links is a time consuming process that includes research, relationship building, management, and much more.  But, what defines a “quality” link?

There are the basics like relevancy of page to site topic, anchor text, page placement, and so forth.  Yet, not every link builder follows the same set of rules or has the same set of standards.  Similar to the dating world, there are the linking prudes and the linking………….promiscuous nouns.

The level of standards that one applies to their linking efforts places them into one of the two categories (with some gray area in the middle for possible one-time occurrences).  For example, if you believe that no link is a bad link, then you may in fact fall into the second category.  This train of thought is very common and not necessarily wrong.  The more links a site has the more “votes” it receives from the search engines.  This traditionally will increase a site’s visibility to some extent.  This linker wants to be the life of the linking party, get as many links as possible, and may not concern themselves much with where the link is coming from or if it is relevant.

Now on the other end, the linking prude may want to test the waters a bit more.  This linker may stand in the corner of the linking party, observe a bit, consider their reputation,  and then strike up a conversation with someone who has a similar persona.   This train of thought is not wrong either.  A link from a highly relevant site (from the search engine and topic perspectives) can offer the same effect as numerous links from sites that are less relevant.

So in the game of linking is is best to be a prude or more promiscious?  Does it depend on the site that the linker is working with?  What are your thoughts?

is it possible to be both, in this case, or just one or the other? cause a good link building campaign should probably have a little bit of both of these practices.

I think it is possible to be a bit of both and hit that gray area in the middle. However, most link builders have a tactic that they are more accustom to using.

If you are use to purchasing links, it may be difficult for you to create a campaign without that piece included. On the other hand, if you never purchase links adding that tactic may be a hard transition.
