I love it when journalists use sensationalistic language to make their writing more dramatic. Forbes released an article today entitled “Condemned To Google Hell” with an opening line of “Don’t anger the Google gods.” While I am the last person to refute that Google is one of the more powerful entities in business today, putting their brand and the word “hell” in an article headline seems like a bit much. Another quote from the article, “Google Hell is the worst fear of the untold numbers of companies that depend on search results to keep their business visible online,” can provide an extremely valuable lesson for any marketer out there. Relying on one channel or customer source to support your business is a very bad idea. Entering Google hell is probably not ever a pleasant experience, but diversification is what will keep you in business if the Google gods decide your site is unfit!
