IKEA has come up with ideal way to sell something as simple (and somewhat boring) as closets to all walks of life.
Their “Come Into the Closet” idea utilizes high end video and simple flash to highlight the benefits of their closet collections while personalizing each product to cater to a certain audience. The site features a clean layout, nice typography, and crisp, vibrant flash video in which you can navigate through with the use of elevator-type buttons that seamlessly take you from one floor to another and demonstrate the features of each closet through contrasting subjects.
There is one downfall to this site, the load time, but once you’re inside, it does a great job of effectively showcasing the benefits of the product through a somewhat virtual reality of everyday human experience.
IKEA. Two words: smashed fingers. There is actually a whole book of words to properly characterize the IKEA shopping experience and subsequent ‘assembly required’ experience. Smashed fingers applies to both.
As a sophisticated 30-something, I still adore IKEA — even though I need to meditate and medicate before entering that twisted maze of adorable sample living spaces. The trick is to enter through the warehouse — avoiding the jacked up maze altogether!
So, to me — and who am I? — the absolute best part about IKEA is the product names. Who knew that a pencil cup called Puhl or Poople could be so cool?! My dream job would be to name IKEA products, without any knowledge of the Swedish language. Just use lots of umlauts and whatnots, right?!
Oh, and the other outstanding thing about IKEA is that it puts all relationships to the test. Oh yes, you’re gonna fight. You’re gonna want a divorce! It’s not over — you still have to get home and put the fabulous finds together without killing each other, or yourself. But if you can survive, your relationship will be exponentially stronger than it was when you walked in.
Sorry about the IKEA rant. I’ve been dying to get that out for a long time. Thanks for providing the forum.
Cheers
