Social media is always evolving which is part of the reason why we love it. Adjustments like Twitter hashtags prove that consumers behavior is (or should be) the key driver in social media improvements. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace are continually releasing updated versions--all in the hopes of keeping up with users.
But what happens when social media evolves beyond itself? Preferred modes of communication have wavered between phone calls, email, text messages and tweets. What’s the next trend in social media and can marketers keep up?
Profile on Facebook: Like its user base, Facebook is aging. Once a community exclusively for college students, Facebook’s fastest growing demographic is women over 55 years old. As of February 2009, this segment was growing at a rate of 175.3 percent. The 18-25 age group still has the largest footprint with more than 19 million users, but what happens when these folks inevitably age, graduate from college or worse become inactive?
What does this mean for Facebook? Without an influx of younger users, Facebook will go the way of the dodo. Advertising revenue will dry up and loyal users will jump ship. The latter is already happening because social networking with your parents and grandparents doesn’t have the same lure as sharing pictures with friends.
